Rent a car in Almaty for a day, a week or a month — booked online, delivered to your airport terminal, hotel or address, with the full price visible before you confirm.
Almaty is a city built for driving. It stretches from the steppe up into the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau, the distances between districts are real, and the most interesting places around the city — mountain lakes, canyons, national parks — sit beyond the reach of any timetable. A rental car turns a trip to Almaty from a sequence of taxi rides into something you actually control.
Rentcar24 has rented cars in Almaty since 2023 to residents, business travellers and visitors from abroad. This page explains what we offer, what it costs you in time and paperwork, and where a car is genuinely worth having.
Why rent a car in Almaty
- The city is large and spread out. Getting from Medeu to the airport or from Al-Farabi Avenue to the Sayran area is a serious journey by public transport and an expensive habit by taxi.
- The mountains start where the city ends. Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake and the Kok-Zhailau trailheads are 30–60 minutes from the centre — if you have a car.
- Day trips are the whole point. Charyn Canyon, the Kolsai Lakes, Lake Kaindy and the Altyn-Emel reserve are same-day or overnight drives, and are effectively car-only destinations.
- Business travel runs on its own clock. Three meetings in different districts plus an evening flight is a normal Almaty day. A car makes it possible.
- It is often cheaper than the alternative. Past roughly four or five taxi rides a day, a rental car plus fuel usually wins — and it waits for you outside.

How booking works
- Choose your dates and pick-up point. Enter when you need the car and where you want it; availability is filtered to real cars for that period.
- Compare models and see the total. Daily rate, rental period, insurance and the mileage allowance are shown together, so there is no end-of-rental surprise.
- Confirm online. Reserve with your card — no office visit, no scanned forms sent by email.
- Collect the car. We inspect the vehicle together, record its condition, hand over the documents and you drive away.
What you need to bring: a valid driving licence, your passport or ID, and a bank card in the main driver’s name for the refundable deposit. Full detail is on the rental requirements page.
Driving in Almaty: what to know first
- Traffic peaks hard. 08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00 on Al-Farabi, Abay and Rayimbek avenues are slow. Plan airport runs with an hour of slack.
- The city slopes. Almaty runs uphill towards the mountains — “up” means south, towards the Alatau, which is the easiest orientation trick in the city.
- Winter changes the car you need. From roughly November to March, mountain roads want a crossover or SUV on proper winter tyres.
- Parking is paid in the centre. Marked zones use mobile payment; shopping centres and business centres have their own car parks.
- Speed cameras are everywhere. Fines are issued automatically and traced to the vehicle, so keep to the posted limits — more detail in our guide to driving in Kazakhstan.
Rental periods
One to three days suits a city visit, a single mountain day trip or an airport-to-conference-to-airport business stay. Four to fourteen days is the usual road-trip window, long enough for Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy without rushing. A month or more works out considerably cheaper per day and is covered on our long-term car rental page — popular with relocating professionals and anyone whose own car is off the road.
Planning a trip beyond the city?
Our travel guides cover the routes clients actually drive: the best road trips from Almaty, Charyn Canyon in a day, and Big Almaty Lake and Shymbulak. If you are unsure which category of car a route needs, this comparison answers it.
Frequently asked, briefly
Can I drive a rental car outside Almaty?
Yes — travel anywhere inside Kazakhstan is allowed. Crossing an international border needs written permission arranged in advance.
Do I need an International Driving Permit?
If your national licence was issued by a country party to the Vienna Convention, it is generally accepted. Otherwise, carry an IDP together with your national licence.
Is the deposit refundable?
Yes. It is blocked on the main driver’s card at pick-up and released after the car is returned without damage, outstanding fines or missing fuel.
